In 1777, a large building stood at the Corner of Park and Pleasant Streets in Danbury CT. Just what purpose this building served before March of 1777, we do not know. But at that time, it was confiscated or purchased by the Northern Department of the Continental Army. The head of the department was Dr. Turner, but Dr. Foster came to Danbury to run the vaccination center for smallpox. (He and his wife put up with Mayor Col. Joseph Platt Cooke.
Many modern folks are not aware of the dreadful plague of smallpox that overcame our nation at that time. Residents in 1777 were quite aware of what could happen. As a child of eight, I received this vaccine before a trip to Mexico with my parents. My mother and I just went to the doctor and came home, thinking nothing of it. Nothing of the kind happened in 1777!
The story of vaccination (whether correct or not) was that African slaves taught whites how they did things in Africa, moving live virus from a sick person's horrible sores to a cut on a well person's arm. The well person would for sure get sick, but (mostly) not sick enough die. Although, sadly some did indeed die from the inoculation. (Thousands died during the Revolution of smallpox, which left horrible lifelong pits to ruin the living victims' faces forever.)
Smallpox vaccination brought extreme fear of the disease getting loose in the community and creating the same local disaster as covid has recently. Therefore, soldiers came to the Danbury Military Hospital by regiment and they were not let out again for a month!
So how could I get inoculated for smallpox and then simply resume my daily 8-year-old life? Because later, doctors discovered that another mild disease called cowpox could be used as a vaccination against smallpox and it worked just as well -- except that you still got cowpox, but nobody died and facial evidence was minor if anything at all.
Why didn't I get cowpox or have to be in quarantine? Because the next innovation used dead virus, which worked 100%!
